Is Your Favorite Food Making You Sick?

Author: Oksana Aron, MD Source: Weight Loss NYC Jan 8, 2024

Are your favorite foods making you sick?

A study in the journal Nature suggests that emulsifiers—commonly used ingredients in many favorite processed foods—may be interfering with bacteria in our digestive tracts and causing increases in metabolic syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, and obesity.

woman illness
Diet and Inflammation

Ingredients such as lecithin, carrageenan, polysorbate80, polyglycerols and xanthan and other “gums” improve the texture and shelf-life of many supermarket foods and keep ingredients such as oils and fats from separating. They are found in many ice creams, baked goods, salad dressings, veggie burgers, non-dairy milks and hamburger patties.

Several commonly used ingredients in many popular processed foods could be interfering with bacteria in our digestive tracts yielding increases in obesity, metabolic syndrome, IBS and more. can help you address many of these health concerns.

In the study, when fed emulsifiers, the mice who had normal immune systems developed mild intestinal inflammation and a metabolic disorder that led them to eat more. They became obese, hyperglycemic and insulin resistant. The mice with abnormal immune systems developed chronic colitis.

Food additives could be inducing inflammation

Emulsifiers seem to change the gut microbiota (or environment) and how bacteria interact with the intestine. This paves the way for inflammation. While emulsifiers may not be the sole cause of the rise in obesity, they could very well be a factor.

Many emulsifiers and food additives are considered safe by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). However, the FDA has not determined safe levels of consumption, particularly because people consume emulsifiers in so many different foods.

Additional studies on humans are needed to better understand how emulsifiers impact humans.

Weight Loss Pills: What Works?

Author: Oksana Aron, MD Source: Weight Loss NYC Dec 18, 2023

What weight loss supplements are safe?

You want to lose weight—and fast. You’re willing to try almost any weight loss product promising a miracle, but will it work? And more importantly, is it safe?

Weight Loss pills
FDA Approved Medications

FTC cracks down on false weight loss claims

Looks like the Federal Trade Commission is cracking down on companies hawking weight loss products with bogus claims and here’s what’s happening right now.

Products that the FTC says are making false claims include Sensa and a “slimming” body cream by L’Occitane. The FTC is also working to get consumers their money back for purchasing such products and is going to urge the companies to stop the false advertising.

Some common false claims:

  • Eat whatever you want and still lose weight
  • No diet or exercise required
  • Just take this pill and you’ll lose weight

There’s no miracle

Jessica Rich, Director of the FTC Bureau of Consumer Protection:

“The chances of being successful at substantial weight loss just by sprinkling something on your food, rubbing creams on your body or just using a supplement, well, they’re slim to none”

There are no miracle weight loss pills, no matter what those companies try to get you to believe. Buying these supplements from unscrupulous sources online without a doctor’s supervision is dangerous. Not only do they not work—they could cause you serious harm or even death.

How to lose weight safely

The only legal (and legitimate) weight loss medications are those approved by the FDA, and are only available by prescription. These include Phentermine, Phendimetrizine, Qsymia, and more:

More Obese Americans than Overweight

Author: Oksana Aron, MD Source: Weight Loss NYC Jun 29, 2015

Americans continue to gain weight

Several striking news reports reflect that in the US, more adults who are obese outnumber those who are just overweight. The LA Times reported notes from published in JAMA Internal Medicine quoting “adults who are obese now outnumber those who are merely overweight.”

[Researchers] estimated that 67.6 million Americans over the age of 25 were obese as of 2012, and an additional 65.2 million were overweight.
  • Washington Post remarks “"[this is] a startling shift from 20 years ago when 63 percent of men and 55 percent of women were overweight or obese and a depressing sign that campaigns to get Americans to eat healthier and exercise more may be failing.”
  • CBS News (website) notes the ”analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2007 to 2012 to estimate the prevalence of overweight and obesity.” including details on “15,208 men and women age 25 or older.”
  • TIME magazine iterated “40% of men were overweight and 35% of men were obese” — “30% of women were overweight and 37% were obese.” Numbers “are similar to those estimated by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which suggest that one third of American adults are obese.”
  • and MedPage Today remarked “33% of Americans ages 25 to 54, and 28% of those 55 and older, fell into the normal weight category of having a (BMI) of 18.5-24.9.”

Weight loss supplements: Are they safe?

Author: Oksana Aron, MD Source: Weight Loss NYC Jun 9, 2015

All those weight loss drugs advertised on TV.

Unregulated fat-burning weight loss supplements.

Over-the-Counter Weight loss supplements: Are they safe?

Have you tried everything?

All the fad diets.

All those weight loss drugs advertised on TV.

All those popular fitness crazes.

And they still didn’t work for you?

People resort to desperate measures in their quest to lose weight, but what really works? That little fat-burning wonder cure you bought online, although it says it’s “natural,” may not be the miracle drug you’re hoping for. It may actually pose a serious health risk or even cause death.

5 dangers of unregulated diet supplements

A lot of those over-the-counter diet supplements are not helping people lose weight. Not only are they unregulated by the FDA, they’re also causing liver damage. Here are just a few startling facts recently published about bogus dietary supplements.

  1. They cause 20% of reported liver injuries
  2. They result in death or necessitate a liver transplant twice as often as liver injuries caused from FDA-regulated medicines
  3. They show little or no evidence for safety or efficacy
  4. The high amount of catechins typically found in unregulated diet supplements aren’t always labeled and can cause liver toxicity.
  5. Many of these products are mislabeled, have been adulterated or contain dangerous dosages.

The FDA is prevented from approving most of these weight loss drugs before they’re sold. Often, they can’t do anything until people have died from them. So it’s best to steer clear of any you find outside of your doctor’s office. If you’ve been taking these supplements in vain, toss them in the trash and start fresh. You can slim down and lose weight the right way without putting your life at risk.

Contrave and Saxenda, two latest Weight Loss medications receive FDA credentials

Author: Oksana Aron, MD Source: Weight Loss NYC Sep 12, 2014

New Weight Loss Medication Contrave® approved for treatment of Obesity and Overweight conditions

“Several safe and effective prescription medicines can be used to overcome the hurdle of weight loss, the latest of these to receive FDA approval is a combination of two other medications, naltrexone hydrochloride and bupropion hydrochloride extended-release tablets. Additionally, liraglutide has received favorable recognition from the FDA.” –, WeightLossNYC®

“Contrave is a combination of two FDA-approved drugs, naltrexone and bupropion, in an extended-release formulation. Naltrexone is approved to treat alcohol and opioid dependence. Bupropion is approved to treat depression and seasonal affective disorder and as an aid to smoking cessation treatment.

“The effectiveness of Contrave was evaluated in multiple clinical trials that included approximately 4,500 obese and overweight patients with and without significant weight-related conditions treated for one year. All patients received lifestyle modification that consisted of a reduced- calorie diet and regular physical activity.” – FDA statement, Sept.2014

Safe and Effective Weight Regimen

Like similar treatments, medical supervision is highly advised, as part of a . The unique combination of this new medication also underscores compatibility with the current state of health and fitness for any individual. Similarly, an FDA panel greenlighted Saxena® (liraglutide) as another effective candidate for medical weight loss treatment. Whereas most weight loss medications address hunger mechanisms, each approach offers a different biological or neurological pathway, providing alternative options for practitioners and patients to optimize for individual results. Qsymia, Another Anti-Obesity Diet Drug Approved by FDA

Author: Oksana Aron, MD Source: Weight Loss NYC Jul 26, 2012

women weight loss

New weight loss pill

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration just recently approved another prescription medical weight loss drug, Qsymia (previously named Qnexa), which is said to produce significant weight loss.

Qsymia: The facts

In clinical trials, patients experienced a more dramatic weight loss with Qsymia than with Belviq, another weight loss drug that recently got FDA approval*. Patients in the trial went from an average of 227 pounds to 204 pounds while on Qsymia. Those on Belviq went from an average of 220 to 207.

Meant for obese or overweight patients with a BMI of 27 or greater who suffer from hypertension and diabetes, Qsymia’s benefits include lowered blood pressure and cholesterol levels in obese people and less chance of getting Type 2 diabetes while on the drug. It also contains phentermine, an appetite suppressant.

Possible side effects include an increased heart rate and birth defects when taken by pregnant women. Qsymia is expected to be available soon, while its manufacturer, Vivus, will conduct a study on its cardiovascular effects, as required by the FDA.

HCG for Weight Loss: FDA says fraud

Author: Oksana Aron, MD Source: Weight Loss NYC Oct 25, 2011

Weight Loss Health

As we’ve reported often on our weight loss blog, FDA warnings on over-the-counter weight loss gimmicks should be taken very seriously. Most if not all of these items have never been clinically proven or tested as safe OR effective! Furthermore, the FDA clearly warns on their website:

[The] FDA has identified an emerging trend where over-the-counter products, frequently represented as dietary supplements, contain hidden active ingredients that could be harmful. Consumers may unknowingly take products laced with varying quantities of approved prescription drug ingredients, controlled substances, and untested and unstudied pharmaceutically active ingredients. These deceptive products can harm you! Hidden ingredients are increasingly becoming a problem in products promoted for weight loss.

If not harmful if nothing else they’re just not helpful: ‘economic fraud’, says FDA health fraud leader, as reported in USA Today.

Dieting Bites

Author: Oksana Aron, MD Source: Weight Loss NYC May 20, 2011

You Are What You Eat…

dieting sucks

Extreme Eating: Do you want some lard with that burger?
In some Chinese-American restaurants customers can choose a dish from column A and one from column B. These meals typically come with soup and an egg roll. The menu items below may lead customers to choose the road to heart attack, diabetes, stroke and/or obesity. They come with the proverbial over-sized salt shaker and a superabundance of fat.

While the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not yet set a date for implementation of a new law which will require restaurant chains with 20 or more outlets to disclose calorie counts to customers, many chains’ websites already contain jaw-dropping nutritional facts.

Applebee’s New England fish and chips, as an example, packs almost an entire day’s calories in one fatty over-salted meal:
Calories: 1910
Fat: 137 grams, 12 grams saturated
Sodium: 1350
In addition to the high caloric content, this meal contains the fat equivalent of ¾ cup of mayonnaise and more than half a day’s sodium requirement.

Calorie Guidelines

Federal nutrition guidelines readily available on most packaged foods consider a typical daily diet to contain 2000 or 2500 calories, the lower figure usually for women and children and the higher for men.
Federal guidelines also recommend that those on a 2000 calorie diet, consume:
  • less than 65 grams of fat a day and less than 20 grams of saturated fat
  • less than 2400 milligrams of sodium
Those typically needing 2500 calories a day need consume:
  • less than 80 grams of fat and less than 25 grams saturated fat
  • less than 2400 milligrams of sodium

Do you consider a tuna fish sandwich a typical light lunch? Think again when it comes to Quizno’s tuna melt sub. It weighs in with:
Calories: 1520
Saturated fat: 21 grams
Sodium: 2020 milligrams
A healthier option would be to share it with a friend (or two) and have an apple for dessert if half a sub isn’t satisfying. Ordering a plain tuna sandwich on sliced bread without the cheese would also greatly reduce calorie, fat and sodium content.

Another head spinner is Outback Steakhouse’s full rack of baby back ribs served with Aussie fries:
Calories: 1956
Fat: 133 grams, 56 grams saturated
Sodium: 2741 milligrams

The total fat is comparable to eating nearly a stick and a half of butter!

Sadly these examples are not isolated instances. Restaurants have found salt and fat to be inexpensive ways to make food tastier. Diners keep returning for more.

In the search for new and different enticements, the food industry seems to make many dishes and foods more fattening over time. Fried chicken morphs into KFC’s Double Down sandwich by adding two slices of bacon and two slices of cheese. Creative chefs roll chocolate covered pretzels in M&M’s, nuts and toffee chips, adding calories and fat. Cheesecake becomes gluttonous with the addition of Reese’s peanut butter cups, fudge cake and caramel as in the Cheesecake Factory’s Reese’s peanut butter cheese cake.

Choose your indulgences carefully and sparingly. Check restaurants’ websites ahead of time to select healthier options. Limit portions consumed. And find yourself en route to a healthier, slimmer you.

Sodium Shake-down

Author: Oksana Aron, MD Source: Weight Loss NYC Jun 29, 2010
sodium intake and nutritional values

“to shake or not to shake?”

Even if you never use a salt shaker at your meals, you may be ingesting far more sodium than your body needs, putting you at increased risk for high blood pressure (hypertension), strokes, cardiovascular disease and, it’s likely, ulcers and heartburn as well.

Yes, our bodies do need salt. It contains sodium which is an essential mineral. The recommended level for most Americans, which includes children, all African Americans, adults over age 40 and anyone with high blood pressure is 1500 milligrams (mg)/day. The recommended level for those who fall outside these categories is 2300 mg. Most Americans consume 3000-8000 mg/daily! Thus, most Americans are consuming two to five times the amount of sodium needed each day!

Weight Loss Tip: Use WeightLossNYC's Free Online Nutritional Calculator

Health experts have sounded a loud warning: Reducing intake to appropriate levels could save 150,000 lives per year, mostly by preempting high blood pressure.

Laudably, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently announced plans to reduce the amount of sodium in restaurant and processed foods gradually over the next ten years. Will this be enough and fast enough to reverse the effects of high sodium on Americans’ health? It’s certainly a step in the right direction but consumers must also educate themselves and make lower sodium choices.

Most Americans due to time and convenience factors will continue to use some processed foods. The key is to consider the sodium content (as well as fat and calories) on nutritional labels. — A typical example:

  • Tuna fish (half of a 5 oz. can) = 250 mg.
  • 2 slices of whole wheat bread = 150 mg.
  • 1/2 can (7.5 ozs) of Trader Joe’s chicken noodle soup = 730 mg.
  • TOTAL = 1130 mg. which is 75% of most Americans’ daily sodium limit

You can easily imagine eating a bowl, instead of a cup of soup, which means 1460 mg. from soup alone with a total sodium count for this ostensibly healthy lunch (it does include heart healthy fish and low fat soup after all) of 1860 mg.! What if you add a few crackers with this lunch (81 mg. for 3 Ritz crackers) or a pickle (280 mg. for a medium one) with the sandwich? Do you feel your blood pressure rising?

Read More Weight Loss Tips from Dr. Aron, Bariatric Physician

Dining out can be an even greater sodium nightmare. Meals, particularly fast food meals, often contain 5000 mg. or more of sodium. Adding sodium can also be a mask for using less than the freshest produce and other ingredients in processed foods. Add preservatives, some of which include sodium and watch those blood pressure numbers rise.

Eat Fresh, Not Processed, Foods

The antidote: eat fresh, not processed. Fresh fish, meat, poultry and vegetables, prepared simply with a couple shakes of salt and desired herbs provides sound nutrition without excess sodium. Add freshly prepared pasta, beans, rice, quinoa or other whole grains for variety and even greater nutritional value.

Eat Fruit Liberally

Eat fresh fruit liberally. Now is the time the Farmers Markets and grocery stores are stocked with an abundance of fresh peaches, plums, melons, cherries. Low in sodium and high in taste, fruits are easy to snack on and don’t pack the sodium that pretzels and other processed snacks do. In the winter when fresh choices aren’t as plentiful, dried fruit in moderation (watch the calories) can replace some of the recommended 2-5 daily fruit servings.

Plan Your Grocery Shopping

As you plan your grocery shopping, think fresh, fresh, fresh! Planning ahead can also save time, a frequent excuse for not eating more healthily. Leftover chicken breasts from dinner can be tossed into a salad or put in a pita pocket with lettuce and hummus for a low sodium and nutritious lunch. Last night’s leftover fruit salad dessert combined with cottage cheese and unsalted nuts is another healthy option.

Read Nutritional Labels

Be creative and read nutritional labels. Look at cooking magazines and websites for healthy menu options. A little planning goes a long way. Also keep in mind that as your taste buds get used to the taste of fresh and not processed, food will taste better, while treating your body better. Eating fresh will also usually mean keeping your calories and cholesterol in check. And your waistline.

FDA warns against non prescription weight loss pills

Author: Oksana Aron, MD Source: Weight Loss NYC Jun 1, 2009
The FDA is warning people against taking 28 types of weight loss pills. The tainted products contain potentially dangerous undeclared ingredients, the Food and Drug Administration found, including prescription drugs in levels much higher than the maximum recommended dosage:

The brands are Fatloss Slimming, 2 Day Diet, 3x Slimming Power, Japan Lingzhi 24 Hours Diet, 5x Imelda Perfect Slimming, 3 Day Diet, 7 Day Herbal Slim, 8 Factor Diet, 7 Diet Day/Night Formula, 999 Fitness Essence, Extrim Plus, GMP, Imelda Perfect Slim, Lida DaiDaihua, Miaozi Slim Capsules, Perfect Slim, Perfect Slim 5x, Phyto Shape, ProSlim Plus, Royal Slimming Formula, Slim 3 in 1, Slim Express 360, Slimtech, Somotrim, Superslim, TripleSlim, Zhen de Shou and Venom Hyperdrive 3.0.

Many of the products are marketed as "dietary supplements" and claim to be "natural" or contain only "herbal" ingredients. But the FDA said some of the pills include sibutramine, a controlled substance; rimonabant, a drug not approved for marketing in the U.S.; phenytoin, an anti-seizure medication; and phenolphthalein, a suspected carcinogen.

Many of these products contain medication or chemicals that may raise your blood pressure in the very list and may kill you at the most. Even more a lot of these products (maybe all) have no scientific bases that they actually work.
All the medications that we dispense at our Medical weight loss center are FDA [government] approved and fully endorsed by the American Society of Bariatric Physicians and the American Board of Bariatric Medicine.

FDA Tells Consumers to Stop Hydroxycut Use

Author: Oksana Aron, MD Source: Weight Loss NYC May 11, 2009

The Dangers of Gimmicks

The FDA is now warning consumers to stop using several Hydroxycut products because of their connection to serious liver problems. Iovate Health Sciences, the company that distributes the products, has agreed to remove them from the market.
Health problems reportedly due to Hydroxycut product use include jaundice, elevated liver enzymes, liver damage requiring a liver transplant, seizures, cardiovascular disorders and muscle damage, and they have also been linked to one person's death as a result of liver failure.

Don’t Gamble with your Life

The 14 Hydroxcut products being recalled by the FDA include:
  • Hydroxycut Regular Rapid Release Caplets
  • Hydroxycut Caffeine-Free Rapid Release Caplets
  • Hydroxycut Hardcore Liquid Caplets
  • Hydroxycut Max Liquid Caplets
  • Hydroxycut Regular Drink Packets
  • Hydroxycut Caffeine-Free Drink Packets
  • Hydroxycut Hardcore Drink Packets (Ignition Stix)
  • Hydroxycut Max Drink Packets
  • Hydroxycut Liquid Shots
  • Hydroxycut Hardcore RTDs (Ready-to-Drink)
  • Hydroxycut Max Aqua Shed
  • Hydroxycut 24
  • Hydroxycut Carb Control
  • Hydroxycut Natural
Ano Lobb, a public health researcher has studied the effects of Hydroxycut and other dietary supplements and believes that the ingredient hydroxycitric acid may be to blame, which has previously been linked to liver problems in at least one other medical journal study. Lobb also warns that there are probably many other dietary supplements still on the market that contain that same potentially dangerous ingredient.
Hydroxycut products are marketed as dietary supplements that assist weight loss, fat burning, energy and water loss. Anyone experiencing side effects from Hydroxycut products is asked to report them to the FDA’s MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program.
