Why Your Weight Matters

Author: Oksana Aron, MD Source: Weight Loss NYC Nov 12, 2024

Your Health

The most important reason why your weight matters is your health.

Excess weight can contribute to many serious health issues including obesity, heart disease, and diabetes:

More than 50 health problems are linked to having obesity. These health problems are diseases and conditions that decrease your quality of life and include type 2 diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, sleep apnea, osteoarthritis and many others.

Health Issues

  • Heart Disease

Lipid levels in your blood can lead to accumulated arterial plaques, resulting in heart attacks and strokes. Heart disease is the number one cause of death for Americans.

  • Type 2 Diabetes

Excess abdominal weight can lead to insulin resistance, in turn high blood sugar, which can damage your kidneys and more.

  • High Blood Pressure

Your heart has to work harder to pump through your body, leading to additional cardiovascular concerns.

  • Osteoarthritis

Back and joint pain can result from having excess weight - impairing your mobility - but could also lead to physical damage to these areas.

How Does Belly Fat Affect Your Health?

Author: Oksana Aron, MD Source: Weight Loss NYC Dec 11, 2023

Belly fat beware

Just because you think you’re a normal size and weight, it doesn’t mean you’re healthy. We all know belly fat is unhealthy, but the latest research shows that people of a normal weight who have belly fat have a higher risk of dying from heart disease, even when compared to obese people.

woman measuring her midsection
Lose Belly Fat

The study found that normal-weight people can have what’s called central obesity because of the belly fat. They’re also nearly three times more likely to die from heart disease and twice as likely to die of any cause compared to other normal-weight individuals with a healthy waist-to-hip ratio.

Another danger: Normal-weight people may not feel the need to improve their lifestyle by making healthier choices, which can only increase their health risk.

The healthy solution?

Losing unhealthy weight, eating healthfully, exercising and increasing muscle mass have shown to help normal-weight individuals with central obesity or belly fat. That way, they lose weight and build muscle mass at the same time, while redistributing their weight in a healthier way.

Waist-to-hip ratio, according to some studies, has been found to be more reliable in determining cardiovascular mortality risk than body mass index (BMI).

There is no shortage of diet names to confuse us all. We want to be healthy and want to go beyond just a gimmick or trend. Dr Aron surely knows fact from fad, she prescribes diets to all her patients. So here are some simple facts about what makes a diet healthy, and why it should matter to you.

“Diet is the single most significant risk factor for disability and premature death.” — American Family Physician

Well … That seems like a pretty good reason to care about your diet.

be happy and healthy

Diet Characteristics

Across the board evaluation of clinically viable food plans favor higher percentage of vegetables, limiting sugars, and replacing processed grains with whole grain sources. Important to note is that juices are not considered a proper replacement for real fruits and vegetables due to their higher glycemic index and loss of healthy fiber in processing. Likewise, potatoes fall into the carb camp not as veggies.

Making the proper substitutions can be challenging yet the clinical outcomes are meaningful in that your diet can push back on risk factors for cardio-vascular diseases, high blood pressure, obesity, and of course, diabetes.

Ask the Doctor: Is Saturated Fat Bad for You?

Author: Oksana Aron, MD Source: Weight Loss NYC Jul 16, 2014

The Facts on Fat

Topics: Weight Loss, Obesity, Health

Are you trying to eat right? You're probably overwhelmed with dieting tips and information--some good and some downright incorrect. Just when you thought you knew what you were doing, another new study comes out and changes everything.

The Fat and Skinny on Fat

Doctors and dieting gurus have been harping on staying away from saturated fats, but the latest news challenges all that. Surprisingly, new evidence from a study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine questions popular advice to cut out saturated fats and to eat polyunsaturated fats to prevent heart disease (and weight gain).

In the University of Cambridge study, researchers found no evidence supporting dietary guidelines of avoiding saturated fats to reduce heart disease risk. They also found that omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acid supplements didn't have any significant effect on reducing cardiovascular disease either. Rather than focusing on macronutrients, we should consider the food groups our meals are based on.

Fat is still… fat

So, what do you do now? Should you start eating saturated fats with abandon? Not exactly. Until further research proves saturated fats are completely harmless, the secret to staying healthy, losing weight and lessening your chances of heart disease is still the same advice: eat a healthy diet, stay active and don’t smoke.

Fast Facts on Fish Oil

Author: Oksana Aron, MD Source: Weight Loss NYC Apr 21, 2013

Know your Omega-3s and 6s

omega fish oil supplements
Have you discovered the fat-melting qualities of fish oil yet in your quest to lose weight? If not, don't just give it a try — make it a mainstay in your diet.

Also known as Omega fatty acids, fish oil can help your health in many different ways and should be an important cornerstone of your everyday diet. Read on for more information on how you can benefit from fish oil.

Burn fat faster

You need fat in order to lose weight — the good, healthy kind. This includes Omega-3 and Omega-6. We need these fats to promote our health and facilitate weight loss, but most Americans do not get enough.

Sometimes a supplement is necessary to make sure you're getting a balance of these healthy fats. Results from a daily dose of Omega-3 can be seen in anywhere from a few days to several weeks, but it's no quick fix. It's important to take it every day on a long-term basis for the best results and overall health.

Health benefits

Fish oil can improve so many aspects of your health, there are almost too many to count. Some of these include your heart, vision, joints, immune system, digestive system, pancreas, blood pressure, cholesterol, hormones, mood, energy and more.

Additional benefits of omega supplements:

  • Moderate amounts of Omega-3 fatty acids in your diet have shown to reduce your risk of a first heart attack by 30%.
  • Symptoms in such inflammatory diseases as rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn's disease are also decreased.
  • Omega-3 fatty acids also prevent artery-hardening and heart disease-causing plaques

5 reasons to cut back (or cut out) red meat

Author: Oksana Aron, MD Source: Weight Loss NYC Jan 26, 2013
Are you in the red?

Burgers. Bacon. Cold cuts. Hot dogs. What do these foods all have in common?

Plenty.

They're all red meats, for starters. They're also fattening--and they come with health risks. Below are some important facts that will make you want to cut back on red meat if you're serious about losing weight (and if you're concerned about how it relates to your life span and quality of life).

What is red meat?

In case you're wondering, red meat includes beef, pork and lamb, and recent research shows that eating red meat means you have a higher risk of early death.

Red meat health risks

It's not just your life span that's affected. There are many serious health problems that can occur from regularly eating red meats such as the following:

  • Saturated fat and cholesterol found in red meat are linked to coronary heart disease.

  • Eating processed meats such as bacon, sausage or hot dogs once a day can double your risk of Type 2 diabetes.

  • Heme iron, which is found in red meat, is associated with heart attacks and fatal heart disease.

  • Red meat may increase your risk of colorectal and other types of cancer.

By eliminating or limiting red meat in your diet, you make an important health decision that can almost instantly benefit you. Think of some healthy red meat substitutes--such as lean turkey or grilled mushroom--that satisfy your cravings, but don't present a major health risk.

Get started today on eating and thinking in a healthier way. Make your first appointment today with Dr. Aron at WeightLossNYC if you want to see results and start losing weight. Give us a call at 718-491-5525 and we'll be more than happy to help.

Fast Food Getting You Down?

Author: Oksana Aron, MD Source: Weight Loss NYC Dec 4, 2012

New Fast-Food Health Risk: Depression

fast food link to depression

Don’t let fast food super-size you

Is fast food your weight loss kryptonite? Do you let yourself splurge while on the go, telling yourself, “It‘s just this once,” and that you’ll eat healthier tomorrow to make up for it?

Well that doesn’t work because you’ll just do it again. And again. Before long, you’ve packed on a few extra pounds and you don’t even know why.

Why is fast food bad for you?

Sure, fast food is convenient and cheap, but its unnatural ingredients come with health risks. When consumed regularly, fast food fills you up on fat and empty calories, causes you to gain weight and puts you at risk for obesity. Even worse, you can increase your chance of heart attack, stroke and liver disease.

But that’s not all. New evidence shows that fast food lovers have a higher risk of depression. A Spanish study published in Public Health Nutrition found that people who ate fast food were 51 percent more likely to be depressed.

What’s more, the study authors discovered what’s called a “dose-response relationship,” which means that the more fast food subjects ate the higher their risk of developing depression. And in this case fast food was not limited to just hotdogs, hamburgers, and pizza, but also what the researchers refer to as “commercial baked goods,” meaning foods like doughnuts, croissants, and snack cakes.

The healthy alternative

Think twice before you grab a bite to eat. Instead of dining out, dine at home. Follow a delicious, healthy recipe and learn how to cook for yourself. Knowing what’s in your food and how it’s made will keep you on the road to a healthy weight. People who cook at home are said to live longer too, so it can benefit you in many ways!

3 Great Reasons to Eat More Beans

Author: Oksana Aron, MD Source: Weight Loss NYC Apr 4, 2012

Eat your legumes!

Yes, beans really are a miracle food of sorts. Packed with fiber and a high water content, they can also help you stay nice and trim. Here are some great reasons why you should make beans a staple in your diet.

Beans are satisfying

Because they contain a lot of fiber and water, they help you feel full and satisfied -- in a good way. The benefit: You eat less food and snack less, which can help you lose weight as you consume less overall calories. Fill up on healthy foods like beans instead of high-calorie foods with no health benefits!

Stay or get thin

Because you stay fuller longer and eat less, that means you'll be thinner, have less weight around the waist and weigh on average 7 pounds lighter than those who do not regularly consume beans, according to a recent study.

Other health benefits

With a slimmer waistline, you'll also have a decreased chance of diabetes and heart disease. The antioxidants present in beans (1/3 of your daily intake) can also help keep the free radicals at bay and provide some protection against cancer, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's.

Tip: If you buy canned beans, find a low- or no-salt version.

Make Diet Changes to Lose Extra Weight

Author: Oksana Aron, MD Source: Weight Loss NYC Jan 7, 2012

Gallup’s annual Health and Healthcare survey shows that 52% of all U.S. adults who say they have succeeded at losing weight at some point in their lives said it was due to dietary changes more so than exercise.

How did they do it? Respondents who did lose weight said they altered their diet in the following ways:

1.) eat less
2.) count calories and watch portions
3.) eating more natural foods

The general nature of Americans’ responses -- eating less and working out -- shows that most people find weight-loss success by maintaining good overall health habits, not by relying on quick fixes -- 1% said they had gastric bypass and 4% said they used diet pills/drugs.

Other facts from the study showed that Americans in general still need to improve their diet and get more exercise to combat the high rates of obesity, diabetes and heart disease.

The good news: Even modest weight loss (5% or 10% of total body weight) can improve a person's blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Overweight Ain’t So Great

A recent study found that healthy, nonsmoking white adults whose body mass index (BMI) indicated they were overweight had a 13% greater risk of death than those with a normal BMI. Obese subjects faced an increased risk ranging from 44% to 88%.

Visit WeightLossNYC.com to check your BMI

Body Mass Index (BMI)

BMI is one measure of height and weight used to determine overweight or obesity. Overweight begins at a BMI measurement of 25, obese at 30 and morbid obesity at 40.

Obesity & Mortality

Two-thirds of U.S. adults are either overweight or obese. A 5-foot 6-inch person is considered overweight at 155 pounds, obese at 186 pounds and morbidly obese at 248 pounds.

The study’s conclusions, published in late 2010 in the New England Journal of Medicine, are similar to those of three other large studies. The body of evidence supporting the finding that being even slightly overweight is associated with an increased risk of death is continuing to grow. It debunks the notion that a “few extra pounds” might actually be good for one’s health.

Even being a little overweight increases the risk of early death

The government–funded study analyzed 19 long term studies using each person’s BMI and checked to see who died during a five to 28 year follow up period. The researchers focused on people who were healthy at the study’s start, who were nonsmokers and did not have heart disease or cancer. The results were similar for women and men. Evidence suggests that for the same BMI level, African-Americans may have a lower risk of death and Asians a higher risk. Further research is needed to confirm this.

Is Omega-3 Margarine Heart Healthy?

Author: Oksana Aron, MD Source: Weight Loss NYC Sep 3, 2010

Omega-3 fatty acids have been touted by doctors and health experts as essential to a healthy diet and heart. We can find them in fish oil capsules and many grocery store foods, but a recent study conducted in Holland of omega-3 fatty acids in margarine, however, may challenge its benefits.

In the 40-month long heart study of 4,800 patients that received low doses of omega-3 in the form of margarine in addition to standard heart medication, it made no difference in their chance of experiencing a second heart attack or other cardiovascular problems. Participants in the study were between the ages of 60 and 80 and had experienced a heart attack within the past 4 years.

An important factor to note: the diet in Holland is also different from the American one, as it includes more fish and less red meat and fast food.

Still, a daily dose of omega-3 fatty acids is recommended by many doctors for a healthy heart and weight loss, which can be found naturally in foods like fish (salmon, herring and sardine), soybeans, flax seeds and walnuts.
