The Hara Hachi Bu Diet

Author: Oksana Aron, MD Source: Weight Loss NYC Nov 9, 2024

Easy Eating Tip … from Japan

Japanese Sushi

Starvation-inducing diets du jour aren’t the way to a better body. What matters most is eating healthy, exercise and lifestyle choices.

There are tricks you can learn to help you along the way. Today, we look at the Japanese concept of Hara Hachi Bu. It’s not a fad diet concept, but merely a way to gauge how much food you are putting into your body.

This idea that originates in Okinawa, Japan -- where the average person mainly consumes lean meats, healthy vegetables, soy foods, fruits and whole grains -- is to eat until you feel that you are 80% full.

Your stomach takes about 20 minutes to register that it is “full,” so it’s a great strategy to eat slowly and stop once you start to feel somewhat full. Think you’re still hungry? Wait a half hour to see if you're still hungry, but usually your stomach will be satisfied.

Because of a healthy diet rich in anti-oxidants, Okinawans have 80% lower rates of heart disease and 50-80% lesser chance of breast, colon, ovarian and prostate cancer compared to Americans.

Healthy Eating Tip

If you struggle with figuring out when your body is 80% full, try taking away 20% the amount of food you would normally eat.

Metabolism and Weight Loss

Weight Loss Success
Weight Loss Success

Imagine the passport line at an airport.

People are lined up to get through the gate and the agent needs to stamp each passport before the holder can continue.

The agent can only process each passport one at a time so each person in line has to wait until their turn. As planes arrive more people appear in line and the agent keeps stamping one at a time, on and on.

Imagine your body’s metabolism is the passport agent, and the calories you eat are waiting in line to be burned.

Your metabolism has limits and can only burn off so much at a time - all day and night long - your metabolic rate can only go so fast.

Your metabolism has limits and can only burn off so much at a time - all day and night long - your metabolic rate can only go so fast.

Eating more calories means more time - longer lines - more time to process the food until it's all gone. So here calories are real not some meaningless number. Anything you eat will make the calorie burning line longer.

The difference between you and an airport is your body has storage for the calories. When you’re able to reduce caloric intake enough, your body senses this deficit and starts to burn the stored fat calories instead.

That’s why fitness has limits too. You can’t significantly boost your metabolism to burn calories faster. But you can shorten the weight loss line by curbing your appetite to make your body burn fat instead of food (by virtue of the food not being there!)

You may be curious about the calorie limit prescribed for you. Now you may understand why. You need fewer people in line to empty the passport waiting room!

The Difference Losing 20 Pounds Makes

Author: Oksana Aron, MD Source: Weight Loss NYC Mar 23, 2024

Scale it down

Beat the bulge

If the number on the scale isn’t budging as much as you’d like, there’s still some good news. Research shows that even modest weight loss can have a long-term positive effect on your overall health.

Lose 20 pounds

Research has shown that even a 5 to 10 percent loss of the initial body weight can greatly reduce health risks and improve general well being

Worth the weight (loss)

By losing 20 pounds or 10 percent of a 200-pound person's body weight, overweight and obese individuals can reduce their risk of Type 2 diabetes by as much as 58 percent. It can also benefit sleep apnea, hypertension, quality of life and mobility as people age. Additionally, the health benefits from losing the weight can last up to about 10 years, even if the individual gains the weight back, according to the behavioral study on 3,000 participants who changed their eating habits by tracking everything they ate and keeping unhealthy foods out of the pantry.

Researchers will also examine whether these healthy habits will decrease the risk of heart attacks and heart disease, and ultimately, whether it can prolong your life.

Over-eating, Not Lack of Exercise Causes Obesity

Author: Oksana Aron, MD Source: Weight Loss NYC Feb 6, 2024

Bike or Bite?

A study presented at an international obesity conference in Amsterdam organized by the European Association for the Study of Obesity explains that the obesity epidemic in the U.S. is due to over-eating, and that exercise could not minimize the effects of excess calories.

[To return to 1970s levels] …children would have to cut their intake by about 350 calories a day … and adults by about 500 calories… [equivalent to over 2 hours of exercise per day.]
Woman riding fitness bicycle
Medical Weight Loss Program

Lean on this

Research shows that a decrease in physical exercise is not the primary cause of obesity. It also appears, based on the research, that even though adults step up physical exercise, that it does not negate weight gain caused by over-eating. It was also discovered that changes in physical activity in children had no impact on their gaining weight.

For the US population to return to its leaner, 1970s self, children would have to cut their intake by about 350 calories a day -- equal to one can of fizzy drink and a small portion of French fries, and adults by about 500 calories -- the equivalent of a Big Mac burger.

Alternatively, children would have to walk for an extra two-and-a-half hours a day, and adults for nearly two hours, said Swinburn.

“Getting everybody to walk an extra two hours a day is not really a feasible option for countering the epidemic,” he said.

“We need to limit our expectations of what an increase in physical activity can achieve.”

Weight Loss Facts

In sum, research still holds that physical exercise is necessary for overall health, but eating less is far more important.

In 2005, an estimated 1.6 billion American adults were considered overweight, with at least 400 million of them considered obese.

A Sedentary Lifestyle Means Earlier Death

Author: Oksana Aron, MD Source: Weight Loss NYC Jan 17, 2024

Do you know how long you’ll live?

As if you didn’t have enough reasons to get regular exercise, a recent study shows that those who sit the most have shorter life spans. This is true even for those who exercise. Read on for more details on the study.

Woman seated inside a round wall opening
Weight Loss Motivation

The facts

The study, which included participants 45 years old and older, proves just how vital exercise and staying active are to your health and life expectancy.

Its most striking finding was that people who sat more than 11 hours a day had a 40% higher risk of dying in the next three years than people who sat less than four hours a day. This was after adjusting for factors such as age, weight, physical activity and general health status, all of which affect the death risk. It also found a clear dose-response effect: the more people sat, the higher their risk of death.

It didn’t matter whether the study participants were active or inactive, the more they sat the more likely the were to die within 3 years, showing that prolonged sitting was a risk factor in death.

The good news

The evidence did reveal some positive news: Exercising as much as 5 hours a week or more had a much lower risk of death.

This highlights the importance of not only getting exercise several times a week, but also staying active. Find ways to move throughout the day, like standing instead of sitting while you work, taking the stairs instead of the elevator and taking walk breaks several times a day. Your life span depends on it!

Quality Calories vs. Junk Calories

Author: Oksana Aron, MD Source: Weight Loss NYC Jan 16, 2024

Finding Healthy Calories

We all know when calories add up, so do the pounds. But where those calories come from is even more important. That’s why it’s vital to choose quality calories over empty ones for everything you eat.

green vegetable pasta
Weight Loss Nutrition

What to look for

Ingredients

Look to see what is in your food. Even though the package says it’s only 100 calories, if they include hydrogenated oils instead of far-healthier olive or sunflower oil or bleached white flour instead of whole grains, then it’s junk.

Fiber

We all need roughly 25 grams a day of fiber, which not only helps with regularity, it can keep us feeling fuller and more satisfied than foods without it. Fiber in turn keeps you from overeating and helps you consume less overall calories.

Sugar

If the sugar content is high, then it’s not good for you. If you’re going to eat sugar at all, make sure it’s natural and comes from fruits or vegetables instead of refined sugar in processed foods. Too many sugars in your diet cause you to gain weight.

Fat

Fat is actually a necessary part of a healthy diet — as long as it’s unsaturated. Watch out for trans fats and saturated fats, which will make you fat!

Vitamins and Minerals

Check to see what kinds of vitamins and minerals are in what you’re about to eat. If it has none, then you know it has no nutritional value. Healthy snacks and foods, however, will have at least some.

The One Easiest Weight Loss Tip Ever

Author: Oksana Aron, MD Source: Weight Loss NYC Dec 28, 2023

Lose weight Easily

Is losing weight your number one goal? Setting a goal is great, however break it down into actionable steps so you can start seeing progress right away.

Today’s weight loss tip is so simple, yet most people don’t even consider it when trying to shed pounds. It’s one thing we can’t live without: sleep.

Get More Sleep, Lose Weight

Not getting enough sleep is linked to weight gain and obesity. When you’re tired, you reach for the wrong foods and wind up consuming extra calories. It also makes you hungrier, so you end up eating more than you need:

  • A study published in the Wall Street Journal in 2012 found that inadequate sleep triggered increased levels of ghrelin, the hormone that causes hunger, in men.
  • In women, it can lower their levels of the hormone GLP-1, which suppresses appetite.

Do Something About It

If you haven’t been getting enough shut eye (around 6-8 hours for adults), let’s change that. You’ll not only improve your weight loss success, you’ll also improve your quality of life and even live longer than those who are sleep deprived.

Tip: Be sure to shut off your computers, cell phones and TV at least one hour before bedtime to drift off to sleep easily.

If there’s one simple step to take right now to lose weight, sleeping enough is it. Try it and watch how quickly things will change!

Big Changes, Small Steps

Is it time for a change? Take the first step by calling us at 718-491-5525 to set your first appointment with Dr. Oksana Aron at WeightLossNYC™. We’re here to help you every step of the way to your healthiest weight ever.

Lose the Belly, Not Just the Pounds

Author: Oksana Aron, MD Source: Weight Loss NYC Dec 11, 2023

Measure Your Belly to Hip Ratio

Based on findings from a multi-ethnic Dallas Heart Study of more than 2,700 men and women between the ages of 30 and 65, it was determined that body shape was a better indicator of calcium or plaque status than weight or BMI. For both men and women, the larger the belly is in relation to hips the greater the possibility of having arterial calcium in the heart.

Those with the largest waist to hip ratios in the group studied were nearly twice as likely to have coronary calcium and three times as likely to have atherosclerotic plaque compared to those with the smallest. Even incremental increases in waist to hip ratios meant steady increases in calcium deposits.

Yo-Yo Dieting Weight-Gain Myth, Busted!

Author: Oksana Aron, MD Source: Weight Loss NYC Dec 9, 2023

Facts and Friction of Yo-Yo Dieting

You gain weight, you lose some and then you gain some more.

Then you start to wonder if you’ll ever get back to your old weight, worried that you’ve messed up that chance completely.

Weight Loss FAQ

This phenomenon is called yo-yo dieting or weight cycling. No matter what you call it, it’s a vicious and frustrating cycle for 40 percent of men and women in the Western world who are trying to lose weight or stay trim.

But a new study shows that yo-yo dieting will not affect your overall weight loss goals and does not negatively impact your metabolism.

Although severe yo-yo dieters were, on average, almost 20 pounds heavier than the women who were not yo-yo dieters when the study began, at the end of the study the researchers found no significant differences between those who had a history of yo-yo dieting and those who did not.

If you’ve struggled with your weight for years, don’t give up! You still have a chance at achieving your weight loss and health goals. The latest research proves that it’s never too late to get started on a healthier lifestyle by making healthy diet and exercise choices so you can have the body and life you’ve always dreamed of.

The weight cycling did not affect the women’s ability to successfully participate in diet or exercise programs, the study authors reported. Yo-yo dieting also did not affect the percentage of body fat and lean muscle mass gained or lost among the women, they noted.

3 Weight Gain Facts for Women

Author: Oksana Aron, MD Source: Weight Loss NYC Nov 27, 2023

Women and Weight Gain

For women, weight gain happens throughout all life stages, but each stage contains its own set of reasons and risk factors. Review here--from puberty through menopause--how and why women may gain weight, and how you can use that knowledge to your advantage to keep off the weight.

sultry woman
Weight Loss Woman

Puberty

Teenage weight gain: Start healthy habits early

  • The earlier a girl starts puberty, the more likely she is to be overweight or obese as an adult. If she starts her period before age 11, she is likely to weight between 9 and 11 pounds more than another woman who started hers after age 14. Additionally, as many as 26 percent of women who started puberty early were considered obese by age 30 compared with 15 percent of the other women.

  • It’s difficult to imagine weight gain as a problem during childhood, but the childhood obesity epidemic proves this is an important time to start healthy diet and exercise habits that will last throughout the child’s adult life. It’s never too early to start. In fact, the earlier you start your child on a road to healthy living, the better!

Pregnancy

Healthy habits during pregnancy help post-partum weight loss

  • Weight gain is expected during pregnancy, but you still have to proceed with caution and be careful not to gain an excessive amount of weight. Gaining 25 to 35 pounds during pregnancy is usually the goal. Typically, a pregnant woman will gain 2 to 4 pounds in the first trimester, then 1 pound per week after that, but it depends on the woman’s pre-pregnancy weight because 1 pound per week may be too much for some. Your doctor will give you guidance on what your ideal weight during pregnancy should be.

  • After pregnancy, many women’s bodies will hold on to 5 pounds of that gained weight, which may never be shed, but they generally will lose about 10 pounds immediately following delivery. They can lose 5 pounds a month in the next couple of months depending on the following factors: breastfeeding, diet and exercise level. By staying active, getting exercise, eating a healthy diet and breastfeeding, you can lose weight faster and easier.

Menopause

Hormonal changes contribute to weight gain

  • Two-thirds of women are overweight by the time they reach their 50s. A drop in estrogen production is a possible cause, which causes the body to store fat, making weight loss more difficult.

  • Weight loss can be more challenging for women after menopause, so it’s important to seek the help of your doctor to ensure you’re getting proper nutrition, exercise and remain in overall good health. By doing all of the above, you’re increasing your chance of maintaining a healthy weight and leading a healthier, happier life.

6 Simple Weight Loss Secrets Revealed

Author: Oksana Aron, MD Source: Weight Loss NYC Nov 22, 2023

Start losing weight today

Looking to lose weight the fast and easy way? Well, aren’t we all… In addition to a healthy diet and exercise plan, try these weight loss tips and tricks to shed some pounds and stay on track with your weight loss goals. Better yet, these helpful hints require almost no effort at all.

healthy breakfast
Start Your Day Right

Six Simple Steps

  1. Rest up.

Did you know? People who only get 5 hours of sleep can gain as many as 2 lbs. in 5 days. They also consume 6% more calories, according to a new study from the University of Colorado, Boulder. So be sure to catch some Z’s in addition to eating right throughout the day.

  2. Start with a hearty breakfast.

Curb those carbs in the morning and opt for a healthy egg-and-veggie scramble or omelette instead. Eating eggs in the morning instead of a bagel equals 264 less calories consumed the rest of the day, says a Saint Louis University study. Its protein can also help you stay fuller.

  3. Don’t hold off on eating lunch.

Some people let their hectic schedule dictate when they eat lunch, but that can affect your weight loss goals. Eating lunch late (after 3 p.m.) can cause you to lose less weight and have a lower insulin sensitivity. Even when eating healthfully, waiting too long to eat can undermine your diet’s effectiveness.

  4. Think small.

People eat 35% less when eating from a small, individual plate rather than serving themselves from a large platter in the middle of the table.

  5. Remember what you ate.

Thinking back on what you ate for your last meal and how satisfied you were can help you consume 30% less calories at snack time.

  6. Ditch TV watching while eating.

People who eat while watching TV consume 288 more calories per meal on average compared to those who don’t. This is an easy, no-brainer way to eat less.

3 Fatty Foods You Need in Your Diet

Author: Oksana Aron, MD Source: Weight Loss NYC Nov 20, 2023

Fat that does a body good

Believe it or not, fat is a healthy part of your diet. The trick? Choosing the right kind, which helps you stay full, prevent overeating and keep the weight off.

olives and olive oil
Weight Loss Magic

When checking the nutrition facts on your food, scan for “monounsaturated fat” and “polyunsaturated fat”—these are the good fats.

Stay away from saturated and trans fats, which cause weight gain, and can elevate your cholesterol and put you at risk for disease. (Saturated fats should be less than 10% of your calories.)

Add these foods to your diet for a healthy and delicious way to lose weight

  1. Olive oil—Not only a healthy source of monounsaturated fat, olive oil lowers bad LDL cholesterol and raises good HDL cholesterol.

Try it: on salads and as a butter substitute

  2. Nuts—packed with protein, unsaturated fats and omega-3s, nuts are a perfect satisfying snack. All you need is a small serving each day of walnuts, pecans, peanuts, macadamia nuts, hazelnuts, cashews or almonds (the size of a shot glass).

Try it: mixed in with salads and steamed veggies

  3. AvocadoAvocados are high in heart healthy unsaturated fat, helping you feel satisfied. They may also help lower your LDL cholesterol by as much as 17 percent when consumed daily.

Try it: on sandwiches and spread over toast

A Healthier Chip? A Weight Loss Tip

Slip away from the chips…

fatty snack chips
Healthier Diet Plan

Even healthy dieters need to snack throughout the day. But what should you do when you suddenly crave something that’s oh so bad for your weight loss goals? Don’t reach for your salty, greasy standby, the potato chip. Instead, grab something else that not only satisfies that same craving but is much healthier—and tastier.

Life has its ups, life has its dips…

A recent Harvard study found that potato chips are one of the top contributors to weight gain, and it’s no surprise, considering that they are fried and covered in grease. The snack options below, however, have fewer calories and fat.

Healthier Alternatives to Potato Chips

  • Baked or sweet potato chips
  • Apple chips
  • Taro chips
  • Kale chips (easy to make at home!)
  • Plantain chips
  • Soy crisps
  • Lightly salted dried Fruit or Veggie
  • Try this: Dehydrated Green beans

3 benefits of light exercise that help weight loss

Author: Oksana Aron, MD Source: Weight Loss NYC Apr 14, 2023

No more excuses

To see some weight loss results, exercise and healthy eating go hand in hand. If you’ve never been athletic, there’s still hope--because even just a little bit of exercise can do wonders for your health and weight loss goals. Here’s how.

Easy does it

You don’t need to be a marathon runner. In fact, you’re better off jogging and doing moderate exercise if you want to lose weight. The best part? All you need to do is exercise a few times a week to get some traction in your weight loss scheme.

Check out these facts:

  1. You may live longer
Specifically, an encouraging 2012 study of 52,656 American adults found that those who ran 1 to 20 miles per week at an average pace of about 10 or 11 minutes per mile … lived longer, on average, than sedentary adults. They also lived longer than the group (admittedly small) who ran more than 20 miles per week.
  2. You can lose more weight
    • In one study in Denmark, a group of overweight men lost more weight when they exercised moderately for 30 minutes several times per week compared with men who worked out twice as long. They also ate less than the men who exercised more.
  3. You can have more energy
    • In the same study, those who exercised longer sat around more during the rest of the day than those who exercised moderately. Those who exercised for 30 minutes a day seemed to be more energized.
    • Moving around, stretching and being more active during the day all add up! Even if you are active for 10 minutes a few times per day, a few days per week, that counts as exercise too--and every little bit helps.

Just do it

  • The whole point is to not sit around too much being inactive, watching TV or using the computer. Find new ways of doing things (typing while standing, playing with the kids outside more or walking upstairs more often) to burn those extra calories. You’ll not only lose the weight, you’ll also get to enjoy life more when you improve your lifestyle and extend the number of days you get to live!

Weight Loss for Men

The link between erectile dysfunction and weight

It’s a topic no man wants to talk about, but listen up, guys. Men may have a new “cure” for erectile dysfunction (ED) that can also improve other areas of your life: losing weight.

According to an Italian study, researchers found that overweight men experienced an improvement of their ED after going on a healthy eating and exercise plan.

The study involved 110 obese men between the ages of 35 and 55 who suffered from ED and were put on a plan to eat healthy and exercise in order to lose 10 percent or more of their body weight.

In two years’ time, one third of the men had lost 33 pounds on average. Additionally, they were found to be more physically active in general.

ED may be a highly sensitive issue, but this study shows that men have options other than going on medication. By pursuing a healthy, active lifestyle and eating right, men can enjoy a healthier sex life and improved self image. Make the commitment to exercise and diet to lose weight--and improving this condition is just another benefit and motivator for healthy living.

Why Medical Weight Loss?

Author: Oksana Aron, MD Source: Weight Loss NYC Feb 13, 2023

Improve Health Outcomes

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than one-third of U.S. adults and 17 percent of U.S. children and adolescents are obese. Obesity-related conditions include heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer.

“In our own state of New York, the prevalence of adult obesity is nearly 25 percent,” said Dr. Oksana Aron. “I am interested in being part of the solution to this medical epidemic by locally helping patients affected by obesity who seek access to safe evidence-based medical treatment options.”

Physician supervision is necessary to detect and treat weight-related medical conditions. A program supervised by a physician specialized in obesity medicine offers a comprehensive and effective approach to maximizing overall health and reversing co-morbidities.
