A paper published in Bioessays by Dr. Cathy Wyse, working with the University of Aberdeen, examines how the human internal clock, or daily circadian rhythms, is affected by irregular eating and sleeping patterns and work schedules such as shift jobs, and whether that contributes to obesity or impacts health.

Says Wyse: "The human clock struggles to remain tuned to our highly irregular lifestyles, and I believe that this causes metabolic and other health problems, and makes us more likely to become obese.

Dr. Wyse believes that circadian desynchrony affects human health by disrupting the systems in the brain that regulate metabolism, leading to an increased likelihood of developing obesity and diabetes.

Further research is needed in studying how circadian desynchrony, along with diet and exercise, come into play with obesity.

Dieting vs Exercise

Food vs Fitness

Some interesting medical studies compared very low calorie dieting alongside different types of fitness. The goal was to assess weight loss and bone loss in older adults. Participants were randomly split into four groups: dieting, dieting plus fitness, fitness without dieting, and neither/none. A follow up study broke the fitness groups down further into three groups of aerobic, strength training, and both (and none, for control).

Both studies showed all the dieting groups lost weight, whereas the fitness without dieting groups did not, however bone density measurements declined most in the non-fitness diet group.

All three of the groups who dieted and exercised lost about 9 percent of their starting weight, … But aerobic exercise didn’t prevent weight-loss-induced bone loss, whereas strength training alone or combined with aerobic exercise was equally effective at diminishing bone loss [and] for lessening muscle loss.

It’s all about the fatty acids

🐄 Cows producing organic milk are fed grass with high omega-3 fatty acids, while cows used for conventional milk are fed corn, which have higher levels of omega-6 fatty acids.

  • Organic milk has a healthier balance of omega-3 fatty acids and omega-6 fatty acids in all types of milk but nonfat milk, which can aid weight loss or help maintain your weight./p>

  • In the samples taken in the study, the total amount of fat in the organic milk was the same as the conventional milk. But when comparing the types of fatty acids, organic milk had 62 percent more omega-3s and 25 percent fewer omega-6s.

  • Both omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are essential to a healthy diet. Omega-3s can be found in fish and flaxseed, while omega-6s can be found in many fried foods. The right balance of both is key. Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids offer health benefits, but when it comes to milk, organic milk may be your healthiest option. 🐄

The New England Journal of Medicine published a study showing the connection between losing weight and incontinence relief.

The clinical trial, which was cited in a New York Times article by Roni Caryn Rabin, of 338 overweight and obese women with incontinence problems who took in a six-month weight loss program discovered that they experienced half the amount of leakage incidents compared to before the program.

The women, who lost an average of 17 pounds, experienced a 47 percent reduction in the number of weekly incontinence episodes, compared to women in the control group, whose weekly episodes dropped by 28 percent, the study found. The women in the comparison group didn't participate in a weight loss program but attended four educational sessions that included information about weight loss, physical activity and healthy eating.

“The really lovely thing about this is not only can women treat their incontinence, but there are a myriad of other healthy benefits like improved blood pressure control, lipids, sleep, libido,” said Dr. Leslee L. Subak, first author of the paper and an associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of California, San Francisco.

“Weight loss should be a first-line recommendation for urinary incontinence,” she added.

The study supported the hypothesis that excess weight puts extra pressure on the bladder and pelvic floor, and that a loss in weight will put less pressure on the bladder, Dr. Subak told the New York Times.
