Crackdown on Food Packaging Labels

Author: Oksana Aron, MD Source: Weight Loss NYC Nov 1, 2009

Facts, Jack

Do you read nutrition facts labels when you shop for groceries? Many people don’t, and don’t always have the time to. Many food manufacturers try to make things simple by placing logos on the product packaging proclaiming the items are smart choices or heart healthy — but might not be, making it ever more important to read those labels to keep your diet in check.

The FDA is currently trying to crack down on the food industry’s labeling claims that could mislead consumers. This comes after a group of major foodmakers, including ConAgra Foods, Kellogg’s and Unilever started a Smart Choices program in August 2009 that put a green Smart Choices checkmark logo on numerous food products.

These labels were also placed on foods that contain up to 50 percent sugar and represent up to as much as 80 percent of your daily fat intake. Some of the products highlighted the fact that they contain zero trans fats, but did not point out high levels of saturated fats.

That’s why the FDA sent the Smart Choices program a letter stating that it could confuse consumers into choosing processed foods over fruits and vegetables. The FDA is now in the works of devising stricter front-packaging labeling on food products and the Smart Choices program is suspending its operations.

Eat Natural Foods

Dieting to lose weight should not mean depriving yourself of foods that taste good. In fact, eating healthier means you get to eat a lot of richer, better-tasting foods that just so happen to fight fat.

These are just some of those foods that can help you maintain your figure:

Almonds Why they’re good for you: They contain a high amount of alpha-linolenic acid, which speeds up metabolism, and can cut down BMI and weight by as much as 18 percent. Berries Why they're good for you: Fresh or frozen, these Vitamin C-packed fruits can improve the quality of your workouts and help you burn up to 30 percent more fat. Cinnamon Why it’s good for you: Just a 1/4 teaspoon of it on your breakfast can keep you from experiencing an insulin spike, which causes your body to store fat. Mustard Why it’s good for you: The turmeric in mustard slows the growth of fat tissues. Oranges Why they’re good for you: Citrus fruit contains flavones that fight fat. Soybeans Why they’re good for you: They are rich in choline, which stops fat absorption and breaks down fat deposits. (Those with breast cancer in their family history should check with their doctor first.) Sweet potatoes Why they’re good for you: They're high in fiber and keep the insulin in check. Swiss cheese Why it’s good for you: It has more calcium than most other cheeses, reduces fat-producing enzymes and increases further fat breakdown. Of course, the lower-fat version is healthier, too.

Calories in Your Coffee Cup

Author: Oksana Aron, MD Source: Weight Loss NYC Oct 2, 2009

Central Quirk

That extra caffeine perk to get you through the day may also get you a few extra pounds on the scale, says a new study.

The findings are based on 3,000 purchases made at 115 restaurant chains in New York City, and include:

  • Brewed coffee and tea contain an average of 63 calories, including when the drink may come with sugar and milk.
  • Blended beverages contain about 239 calories, which is 89 more calories than a can of soda.A large ice-blended coffee drink can contain a whopping 750 calories or more.

You don’t have to give up your favorite caffeine craving, but moderation always helps, and so does going for low-fat or skim milk instead of whole and using little to no sugar.

Childhood Obesity Tripled

Manage Your Weight

Obesity Health Risk woman on scale

Public Health

Childhood obesity is not only on the rise — it has tripled over the past 25 years.

According to a report in Academic Pediatrics by an obesity expert at Brenner Children’s Hospital, Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, children are not just becoming overweight and obese. Many more are becoming severely obese, which can greatly impact their health. Severe childhood obesity is classified as a child with a body mass index (BMI) that is at least or greater than the 99th percentile for age and gender.

Researchers found the following facts in the study:

  • Severe obesity among children jumped from 0.8 percent in 1976-80 compared to 3.8 percent in 1999-2004. There are now more than 2.7 million severely obese children in the U.S.
  • The highest increases in severe childhood obesity occurred among blacks and Mexican-Americans and those who live below the poverty level. Severe obesity rates for Mexican-American children went from 0.9 percent in 1976-80 to 5.2 percent in 1999-2004.
  • A third of the children considered severely obese were classified as having metabolic syndrome, which is a group of risk factors such as higher-than normal blood pressure, cholesterol and insulin levels that make them more susceptible to experiencing heart attack, stroke and diabetes.

Got Vitamin D?

Author: Oksana Aron, MD Source: Weight Loss NYC Sep 7, 2009

Vitamin D-ficient?

Vitamin D has always been an important part of our daily diet, and now it’s been linked to successful weight loss.

Vitamin D deficiency has commonly been associated with obesity, but the question remains whether it causes obesity, or if obesity causes the deficiency.

In a study presented at The Endocrine Society 91st Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C., researchers shared their findings based on an 11-week study that measured circulating blood levels of vitamin D in 38 overweight men and women before and after they followed a diet plan of 750 calories a day fewer than their estimated total needs. The goal was to find out whether baseline vitamin D levels before going on a calorie-restricted diet would affect weight loss.

The findings included the following:

  • Subjects had insufficient vitamin D levels on average.
  • Higher baseline vitamin D levels predicted greater loss of abdominal fat.
[B]aseline, or pre-diet, vitamin D levels predicted weight loss in a linear relationship. For every increase of 1 ng/mL in level of 25-hydroxycholecalciferol — the precursor form of vitamin D and a commonly used indicator of vitamin D status — subjects ended up losing almost a half pound (0.196 kg) more on their calorie-restricted diet. For each 1-ng/mL increase in the active or hormonal form of vitamin D (1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol), subjects lost nearly one-quarter pound (0.107 kg) more.

Although further research on active role of Vitamin D in weight loss is needed, it is still recommended as a necessary part of a healthy diet.
